Dr. James H. Gatling Honored with Induction into the Community Action Hall of Fame
On Thursday March 13, 2025, Dr. James H. Gatling, President emeritus of New Opportunities Inc., was inducted into the Community Action Hall of Fame at the National Community Action Foundation conference in Washington DC.
Dr. Gatling dedicated over 48 years to advancing community action, embodying the mission of improving the quality of life for economically disadvantaged individuals. Under his 42-year leadership of New Opportunities, Inc. (NOI), he transformed the organization into a leading agency by fostering relationships, building culturally diverse teams, and driving innovative programs that addressed critical community needs. His efforts have left an indelible mark on communities throughout Greater Waterbury, Torrington, and Meriden, CT.
Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Gatling reimagined education for at-risk youth through the establishment of the Ancestors Community Charter High School, which implemented innovative teaching methods to re-engage students. He also spearheaded the creation of programs like the Alternative Incarceration Center, which provided critical support for individuals transitioning from incarceration, and the Patricia Mayfield Hydroponic Center, a food production and training hub that offers jobs and healthy food to low-income communities. Recognizing the importance of holistic service delivery, he designed and implemented the Human Services Infrastructure Initiative to streamline access to social services across the state, ensuring individuals received comprehensive support.
Dr. Gatling has been a tireless advocate for children and families, expanding early childhood education programs to provide safe, enriching environments for children while supporting working parents. His leadership in fatherhood initiatives empowered young men, teaching them how to embrace their roles as fathers and community leaders. In addition, he is nationally recognized for his work in community-based energy efficiency programs and weatherization projects, which have improved energy access and affordability for low-income families. He also championed the ownership and development of agency facilities, reducing costs and enhancing services for those in need.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Gatling has made significant contributions to his community. He founded the Afro Latin Indian Memorial Scholarship, which has awarded over $976,000 to 233 students since 1985. He also established the Bobby Bonds Memorial Golf Classic, a successful fundraising initiative for scholarships, and was the visionary behind the Waterbury African American Leaders and Trailblazers Exhibit. His legacy of service and advocacy is reflected in the numerous accolades he has received, including the Malcolm Baldrige Leadership Award and being named one of the 100 Most Influential Blacks in Connecticut by the NAACP.
