New Opportunities Inc. Tribury Hosts Senior Services Speaker

Lesley West, senior companion program director at New Opportunities Inc., explained explain senior services and volunteer opportunities to the Tribury Rotary Club on September 4 at Juniper’s Restaurant, 1383 Whittemore Rd. According to Ms. West, the Elder Services Division at New Opportunities is seeking volunteers to assist seniors in the towns of Woodbury, Middlebury and Southbury.


A companion’s role is to help homebound elders and older adults build friendly relationships.

The federal government is funding three national programs known as the Senior Corps, in which volunteers must be 55 years or older.

Senior Companions provide comfort, social support, plan meals, offer daily reminders, reminisce, share recreational activities or discuss current events for 15 or more hours per week.

The recipient of a companion’s visit is is homebound, usually due to chronic illness, but does not need medical or nursing care.

Companions are not expected to lift or provide any hands-on-care but may assist with transportation to medical appointments and food shopping. They earn an hourly stipend of $2.65 per hour.

Senior volunteers are also needed for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, delivering meals to elderly persons in Woodbury and Southbury.

Ms. West said many volunteer drivers are happy to be making a difference for in the lives of homebound and frail elders by bringing a hot meal and a friendly word to shut-ins.

In addition, RSVP volunteers may qualify to serve as Money Managers to help an older adult live independently and grow older in a safe, cheerful, home environment.
