New Opportunities of Greater Meriden’s annual “Walk for Warmth” has been providing emergency fuel assistance for local residents since 1989. Walk representatives are currently seeking participants, 5K runners and sponsors, while organizing special activities to mark the event’s 25th anniversary, Saturday, March 22, at First Congregational Church on Colony Street.

New Opportunities Community Services Director, Larry Elliott said a few civic-minded, local residents helped launch the event.

Another early Walk-supporter, Peter Talbot, is now the, “Connecticut Government Relations Manager” of Cox Cable Communications. The busy executive worked alongside Grey at the now-defunct, Dimension Company.

Elliott said the Walk, “was originally designed as a one-time event.”

“A few community-minded oil vendors, local citizens and Record Journal newspaper people Ralph Tomaselli, Alan Church and Clive Davis were instrumental in the event’s evolution,” he said. “The Walk has provided emergency assistance to tens of thousands since then.”

Elliott said a variety of special activities are being planned this year.

“Events will include a U.S. of America Track and Field-sanctioned, 5K Road Race, the annual walk-parade and a large, free, post-walk- reception featuring musical entertainment, raffles, an auction, door prizes, children’s activities and some really good food he said. A number of area dignitaries and special guests will also be on hand.

Walk representatives are currently seeking marchers, runners, entertainers, vendors and businesses who’d like to participate. Potential 5-K runners will have to pre-register and pay a small entrance fee.

Participants and runners can call Ola Brown or Phyllis Crosby at (203) 639-5060 for information. This year’s Walk will certainly provide Meriden with a nice opportunity to celebrate itself.
