The NAACP presented the Roy Wilkins Award to James Gatling, president and CEO of New Opportunities, Saturday at its 47th annual state convention at CoCo Key Water Resort Hotel & Convention Center.

University of Connecticut Athletic Director Warde Manuel was the keynote speaker at the event. He is the first black athletic director in the school’s history.

Also, the group honored Kevin Ollie, the first black head coach of UConn’s men’s basketball team.

More than 200 members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People attended, including delegates from New London and Norwalk.

The daylong event also featured a business workshop, urban expo and college workshops.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy S. Wyman also spoke. NAACP State President Scot X. Esdaile called the event a success. “I’m really excited about what took place today,” he said.
